ButeveninthehourofthedeathofFeanoranembassycametohissonsfromMorgoth,acknowledgingdefeat,andofferingterms,eventothesurrenderofaSilmaril.ThenMaedhrosthetall,theeldestson,persuadedhisbrotherstofeigntotreatwithMorgoth,andtomeethisemissariesattheplaceappointed;buttheNoldorhadaslittlethoughtoffaithashadhe.Whereforeeachembassycamewithgreaterforcethanwasagreed;butMorgothsentthemore,andtherewereBalrogs.Maedhroswasambushed,andallhiscompanywereslain;buthehimselfwastakenalivebythecommandofMorgoth,andbroughttoAngband.
ThenthebrothersofMaedhrosdrewback,andfortifiedagreatcampinHithlum;butMorgothheldMaedhrosashostage,andsentwordthathewouldnotreleasehimunlesstheNoldorwouldforsaketheirwar,returningintotheWest,orelsedepartingfarfromBeleriandintotheSouthoftheworld.ButthesonsofFeanorknewthatMorgothwouldbetraythem,andwouldnotreleaseMaedhros,whatsoevertheymightdo;andtheywereconstrainedalsobytheiroath,andmightnotforanycauseforsakethewaragainsttheirEnemy.ThereforeMorgothtookMaedhrosandhunghimfromthefaceofaprecipiceuponThangorodrim,andhewascaughttotherockbythewristofhisrighthandinabandofsteel.
