ForFeanor,inhiswrathagainsttheEnemy,wouldnothalt,butpressedonbehindtheremnantoftheOrcs,thinkingsotocomeatMorgothhimself:andhelaughedaloudashewieldedhissword,rejoicingthathehaddaredthewrathoftheValarandtheevilsoftheroad,thathemightseethehourofhisvengeance.NothingdidheknowofAngbandorthegreatstrengthofdefencethatMorgothhadsoswiftlyprepared:butevenhadheknownitwouldnothavedeterredhim,forhewasfey,consumedbytheflameofhisownwrath.Thusitwasthathedrewfaraheadofthevanofhishost;andseeingthistheservantsofMorgothturnedtobay,andthereissuedfromAngbandBalrogstoaidthem.ThereupontheconfinesofDorDaedeloth,thelandofMorgoth,Feanorwassurrounded,withfewfriendsabouthim.Longhefoughton,andundismayed,thoughhewaswrappedinfireandwoundedwithmanywounds;butatthelasthewassmittentothegroundbyGothmog,LordofBalrogs,whomEcthelionafterslewinGondolin.Therehewouldhaveperished,hadnothissonsinthatmomentcomeupwithforcetohisaid;andtheBalrogslefthim,anddepartedtoAngband.
ThenhissonsraiseduptheirfatherandborehimbacktowardsMithrim.ButastheydrewneartoEithelSirionandwereupontheupwardpathtothepassoverthemountains,Feanorbadethemhalt;forhiswoundsweremortal,andheknewthathishourwascome.
