ButthehostofMorgoth,arousedbythetumultofLam-mothandthelightoftheburningatLosgar,camethroughthepassesofEredWethrin,theMountainsofShadow,andassailedFeanoronasudden,beforehiscampwasfull-wroughtorputindefence;andthereonthegreyfieldsofMithrimwasfoughttheSecondBattleintheWarsofBeleriand.Dagor-nuin-Giliathitisnamed,theBattle-under-Stars,fortheMoonhadnotyetrisen;anditisrenownedinsong.TheNoldor,outnumberedandtakenatunawares,wereyetswiftlyvictorious;forthelightofAmanwasnotyetdimmedintheireyes,andtheywerestrongandswift,anddeadlyinanger,andtheirswordswerelongandterrible.TheOrcsfledbeforethem,andtheyweredrivenforthfromMithrimwithgreatslaughter,andhuntedovertheMountainsofShadowintothegreatplainofArd-galen,thatlaynorthwardofDorthonion.TherethearmiesofMorgoththathadpassedsouthintotheValeofSirionandbeleagueredCirdanintheHavensoftheFalascameuptotheiraid,andwerecaughtintheirruin.ForCelegorm,Feanor’sson,havingnewsofthem,waylaidthemwithapartoftheElven-host,andcomingdownuponthemoutofthehillsnearEithelSiriondrovethemintotheFenofSerech.EvilindeedwerethetidingsthatcameatlasttoAngband,andMorgothwasdismayed.Tendaysthatbattlelasted,andfromitreturnedofallthehoststhathehadpreparedfortheconquestofBeleriandnomorethanahandfulofleaves.
Yetcausehehadforgreatjoy,thoughitwashiddenfromhimforawhile.
