Iwaited.Iwenttothewindow.Isatonthebed.Ilayonthebed.Iwenttothewindowagain.IntheendIbegantoreadthetwopamphlets.BothwereinFrench,andthefirsthadevidentlyoncebeenpinnedup;therewereholesandrustmarks.THESOCIETYFORREASONWe,doctorsandstudentsofthefacultiesofmedicineoftheuniversitiesofFrance,declarethatwebelieve:1.Mankindcanprogressonlybyusinghisreason.2.Thefirstdutyofscienceistoeradicateunreason,inwhateverform,frompublicandinternationalaffairs.3.Adherencetoreasonismoreimportantthanadherencetoanyotherethoswhatever,whetheritbeoffamily,caste,country,raceorreligion.4.Theonlyfrontierofreasonisthehumanfrontier;allotherfrontiersaresignsofunreason.5.Theworldcanneverbebetterthanthecountriesthatconstituteit,andthecountriescanneverbebetterthantheindividualsthatconstitutethem.6.ItisthedutyofallwhoagreewiththesestatementstojointheSocietyforReason.—————MembershipoftheSocietyisobtainedbysigningtheformulabelow.1.Ipromisetogiveone-tenthofmyannualincometotheSocietyforReasonforthefurtheranceofitsaims.2.Ipromisetointroducereasonatalltimesandplacesintomyownlife.3.Ishallneverobeyunreason,whatevertheconsequences;Ishallneverremainsilentorinactiveinfrontofit.4.Irecognizethatthedoctoristhespearheadofhumanity.
