           WhenIwentdownstairs,themusicroomwaslamplitbutempty.Therewasatrayonthetableinfrontofthestovewithabottleofouzo,ajugofwater,glassesandabowloffatblue-blackAmphissaolives.Ipouredoutsomeouzoandaddedenoughwatertomakeitgomilkilyopaque.Then,glassinhand,Ibeganatourofthebookshelves.Thebooksweremethodicallyarranged.Thereweretwoentiresectionsofmedicalworks,mostlyinFrench,andmanytheyhardlyseemedtogowithspiritualismonpsychiatry,andanothertwoofscientificbooksofallkinds;severalshelvesofphilosophicalworks,andalsoafairnumberofbotanicalandornithologicalbooks,mostlyinEnglishandGerman;butthegreatmajorityofalltherestwereautobiographiesandbiographies.Theremusthavebeenthousandsofthem.Theyappearedtohavebeencollectedwithoutanymethod:Wordsworth,MaeWest,Saint-Simon,geniuses,criminals,saints,nonentities.Thecollectionhadtheeclecticimpersonalityofapubliclibrary.Behindtheharpsichordandunderthewindowtherewasalowglasscabinetwhichcontainedtwoorthreeclassicalpieces.Therewasarhytonintheformofahumanhead,ablack-figurekylixononeside,asmallred-figureamphoraontheother.Ontopofthecabinetwerealsothreeobjects:aphoto,aneighteenth-centuryclockandawhite-enameledsnuffbox.IwentbehindthemusicstooltolookattheGreekpottery.Thepaintingontheflatinnerbowlofthekylixgavemeashock.Itinvolvedtwosatyrsandawomanandwasveryobsceneindeed.
