           Thereappearedonthehighbottomssomecoralshrubs,ofthekindwhich,accordingtoJamesRoss,liveintheAntarcticseastothedepthofmorethan1,000yards.Thentherewerelittlekingfishersandstarfishstuddingthesoil.Butwherelifeaboundedmostwasintheair.Therethousandsofbirdsflutteredandflewofallkinds,deafeninguswiththeircries;otherscrowdedtherock,lookingatusaswepassedbywithoutfear,andpressingfamiliarlyclosebyourfeet.Therewerepenguins,soagileinthewater,heavyandawkwardastheyareontheground;theywereutteringharshcries,alargeassembly,soberingesture,butextravagantinclamour.Albatrossespassedintheair,theexpanseoftheirwingsbeingatleastfouryardsandahalf,andjustlycalledthevulturesoftheocean;
