           Buthoweverthemindoftheyoungmanmightbeabsorbedinthesereflections,theywereatoncedispersedatthesightofthedarkfrowningruinsofthestupendousColosseum,throughthevariousopeningsofwhichthepalemoonlightplayedandflickeredliketheunearthlygleamfromtheeyesofthewanderingdead.ThecarriagestoppedneartheMetaSudans;thedoorwasopened,andtheyoungmen,eagerlyalighting,foundthemselvesoppositeacicerone,whoappearedtohavesprungupfromtheground,sounexpectedwashisappearance.

           Theusualguidefromthehotelhavingfollowedthem,theyhadpaidtwoconductors,norisitpossible,atRome,toavoidthisabundantsupplyofguides;besidestheordinarycicerone,whoseizesuponyoudirectlyyousetfootinyourhotel,andneverquitsyouwhileyouremaininthecity,thereisalsoaspecialciceronebelongingtoeachmonumentnay,almosttoeachpartofamonument.
