           Hewouldhavebeendiscoveredbythebeatingofhisheart,ifbyanymischancethejailershadenteredatthatmoment.Dantesmighthavewaiteduntiltheeveningvisitwasover,buthewasafraidthatthegovernorwouldchangehismind,andorderthedeadbodytoberemovedearlier.Inthatcasehislasthopewouldhavebeendestroyed.
