           However,asiffateresolvedondeprivingtheprisonersoftheirlastchance,andmakingthemunderstandthattheywerecondemnedtoperpetualimprisonment,anewmisfortunebefellthem;thegalleryontheseaside,whichhadlongbeeninruins,wasrebuilt.Theyhadrepaireditcompletely,andstoppedupwithvastmassesofstonetheholeDanteshadpartlyfilledin.Butforthisprecaution,which,itwillberemembered,theabbehadmadetoEdmond,themisfortunewouldhavebeenstillgreater,fortheirattempttoescapewouldhavebeendetected,andtheywouldundoubtedlyhavebeenseparated.Thusanew,astronger,andmoreinexorablebarrierwasinterposedtocutofftherealizationoftheirhopes.

           "Yousee,"saidtheyoungman,withanairofsorrowfulresignation,toFaria,"thatGoddeemsitrighttotakefrommeanyclaimtomeritforwhatyoucallmydevotiontoyou.Ihavepromisedtoremainforeverwithyou,andnowIcouldnotbreakmypromiseifIwould.Thetreasurewillbenomoreminethanyours,andneitherofuswillquitthisprison.
