ItconsistedofaplanofhisowncellandthatofDantes,withthepassagewhichunitedthem.Inthispassageheproposedtodrivealevelastheydoinmines;thislevelwouldbringthetwoprisonersimmediatelybeneaththegallerywherethesentrykeptwatch;oncethere,alargeexcavationwouldbemade,andoneoftheflag-stoneswithwhichthegallerywaspavedbesocompletelyloosenedthatatthedesiredmomentitwouldgivewaybeneaththefeetofthesoldier,who,stunnedbyhisfall,wouldbeimmediatelyboundandgaggedbyDantesbeforehehadpowertoofferanyresistance.Theprisonerswerethentomaketheirwaythroughoneofthegallerywindows,andtoletthemselvesdownfromtheouterwallsbymeansoftheabbe’sladderofcords.Dantes’eyessparkledwithjoy,andherubbedhishandswithdelightattheideaofaplansosimple,yetapparentlysocertaintosucceed.
Thatverydaytheminersbegantheirlabors,withavigorandalacrityproportionatetotheirlongrestfromfatigueandtheirhopesofultimatesuccess.Nothinginterruptedtheprogressoftheworkexceptthenecessitythateachwasunderofreturningtohiscellinanticipationoftheturnkey’svisits.Theyhadlearnedtodistinguishthealmostimperceptiblesoundofhisfootstepsashedescendedtowardstheirdungeons,andhappily,neverfailedofbeingpreparedforhiscoming.
