           Ithasalwaysbeenagainstthepolicyofdespoticgovernmentstosufferthevictimsoftheirpersecutionstoreappear.AstheInquisitionrarelyalloweditsvictimstobeseenwiththeirlimbsdistortedandtheirfleshlaceratedbytorture,somadnessisalwaysconcealedinitscell,fromwhence,shoulditdepart,itisconveyedtosomegloomyhospital,wherethedoctorhasnothoughtformanormindinthemutilatedbeingthejailerdeliverstohim.TheverymadnessoftheAbbeFaria,gonemadinprison,condemnedhimtoperpetualcaptivity.
