           "Itisnothe,"shemurmured,andwaited,intheassurancethatthiswasbutadream,forthemantodisappearorassumesomeotherform.Still,shefeltherpulse,andfindingitthrobviolentlysherememberedthatthebestmethodofdispellingsuchillusionswastodrink,foradraughtofthebeveragepreparedbythedoctortoallayherfeverseemedtocauseareactionofthebrain,andforashorttimeshesufferedless.Valentinethereforereachedherhandtowardstheglass,butassoonashertremblingarmleftthebedtheapparitionadvancedmorequicklytowardsher,andapproachedtheyounggirlsocloselythatshefanciedsheheardhisbreath,andfeltthepressureofhishand.

           Thistimetheillusion,orratherthereality,surpassedanythingValentinehadbeforeexperienced;shebegantobelieveherselfreallyaliveandawake,andthebeliefthatherreasonwasthistimenotdeceivedmadehershudder.Thepressureshefeltwasevidentlyintendedtoarrestherarm,andsheslowlywithdrewit.Thenthefigure,fromwhomshecouldnotdetachhereyes,andwhoappearedmoreprotectingthanmenacing,tooktheglass,andwalkingtowardsthenight-lighthelditup,asiftotestitstransparency.
