           Dantesmadenoresistance;hewaslikeamaninadream:hesawsoldiersdrawnupontheembankment;heknewvaguelythathewasascendingaflightofsteps;hewasconsciousthathepassedthroughadoor,andthatthedoorclosedbehindhim;butallthisindistinctlyasthroughamist.Hedidnotevenseetheocean,thatterriblebarrieragainstfreedom,whichtheprisonerslookuponwithutterdespair.
