           IdiosyncrasyandvicissitudehadcombinedtostampSergeantTroyasanexceptionalbeing.

           Hewasamantowhommemorieswereanincumbrance,andanticipationsasuperfluity.Simplyfeeling,considering,andcaringforwhatwasbeforehiseyes,hewasvulnerableonlyinthepresent.Hisoutlookupontimewasasatransientflashoftheeyenowandthen:thatprojectionofconsciousnessintodaysgonebyandtocome,whichmakesthepastasynonymforthepatheticandthefutureawordforcircumspection,wasforeigntoTroy.Withhimthepastwasyesterday;thefuture,to-morrow;never,thedayafter.

           Onthisaccounthemight,incertainlights,havebeenregardedasoneofthemostfortunateofhisorder.Foritmaybearguedwithgreatplausibilitythatreminiscenceislessanendowmentthanadisease,andthatexpectationinitsonlycomfortableformthatofabsolutefaithispracticallyanimpossibility;whilstintheformofhopeandthesecondarycompounds,patience,impatience,resolve,curiosity,itisaconstantfluctuationbetweenpleasureandpain.

           SergeantTroy,beingentirelyinnocentofthepracticeofexpectation,wasneverdisappointed.Tosetagainstthisnegativegaintheremayhavebeensomepositivelossesfromacertainnarrowingofthehighertastesandsensationswhichitentailed.Butlimitationofthecapacityisneverrecognizedasalossbythelosertherefrom:inthisattributemoraloræstheticpovertycontrastsplausiblywithmaterial,sincethosewhosufferdonotmindit,whilstthosewhominditsoonceasetosuffer.
