           Itmayhavebeenobservedthatthereisnoregularpathforgettingoutofloveasthereisforgettingin.Somepeoplelookuponmarriageasashortcutthatway,butithasbeenknowntofail.Separation,whichwasthemeansthatchanceofferedtoGabrielOakbyBathsheba’sdisappearance,thougheffectualwithpeopleofcertainhumours,isapttoidealizetheremovedobjectwithothersnotablythosewhoseaffection,placidandregularasitmaybe,flowsdeepandlong.Oakbelongedtotheeven-temperedorderofhumanity,andfeltthesecretfusionofhimselfinBathshebatobeburningwithafinerflamenowthatshewasgonethatwasall.

           Hisincipientfriendshipwithheraunthadbeennippedbythefailureofhissuit,andallthatOaklearntofBathsheba’smovementswasdoneindirectly.ItappearedthatshehadgonetoaplacecalledWeatherbury,morethantwentymilesoff,butinwhatcapacitywhetherasavisitor,orpermanently,hecouldnotdiscover.
