           Bathshebawentalongthedarkroad,neitherknowingnorcaringaboutthedirectionorissueofherflight.Thefirsttimethatshedefinitelynoticedherpositionwaswhenshereachedagateleadingintoathicketoverhungbysomelargeoakandbeechtrees.Onlookingintotheplace,itoccurredtoherthatshehadseenitbydaylightonsomepreviousoccasion,andthatwhatappearedlikeanimpassablethicketwasinrealityabrakeoffernnowwitheringfast.Shecouldthinkofnothingbettertodowithherpalpitatingselfthantogoinhereandhide;andentering,shelightedonaspotshelteredfromthedampfogbyarecliningtrunk,whereshesankdownuponatangledcouchoffrondsandstems.Shemechanicallypulledsomearmfulsroundhertokeepoffthebreezes,andclosedhereyes.

           WhethershesleptornotthatnightBathshebawasnotclearlyaware.Butitwaswithafreshenedexistenceandacoolerbrainthat,alongtimeafterwards,shebecameconsciousofsomeinterestingproceedingswhichweregoingoninthetreesaboveherheadandaround.
