Thepertinjunctionwaslikethosecrystalsubstanceswhich,colourlessthemselves,assumethetoneofobjectsaboutthem.Here,inthequietofBoldwood’sparlour,whereeverythingthatwasnotgravewasextraneous,andwheretheatmospherewasthatofaPuritanSundaylastingalltheweek,theletteranditsdictumchangedtheirtenorfromthethoughtlessnessoftheirorigintoadeepsolemnity,imbibedfromtheiraccessoriesnow.
Sincethereceiptofthemissiveinthemorning,Boldwoodhadfeltthesymmetryofhisexistencetobeslowlygettingdistortedinthedirectionofanidealpassion.ThedisturbancewasasthefirstfloatingweedtoColumbus—thecontemptiblylittlesuggestingpossibilitiesoftheinfinitelygreat.
Thelettermusthavehadanoriginandamotive.Thatthelatterwasofthesmallestmagnitudecompatiblewithitsexistenceatall,Boldwood,ofcourse,didnotknow.Andsuchanexplanationdidnotstrikehimasapossibilityeven.
