           Thelettermusthavehadanoriginandamotive.Thatthelatterwasofthesmallestmagnitudecompatiblewithitsexistenceatall,Boldwood,ofcourse,didnotknow.Andsuchanexplanationdidnotstrikehimasapossibilityeven.
