Flutedpilasters,workedfromthesolidstone,decorateditsfront,andabovetheroofthechimneyswerepanelledorcolumnar,somecopedgableswithfinialsandlikefeaturesstillretainingtracesoftheirGothicextraction.Softbrownmosses,likefadedvelveteen,formedcushionsuponthestonetiling,andtuftsofthehouseleekorsengreensproutedfromtheeavesofthelowsurroundingbuildings.Agravelwalkleadingfromthedoortotheroadinfrontwasencrustedatthesideswithmoremoss—hereitwasasilver-greenvariety,thenut-brownofthegravelbeingvisibletothewidthofonlyafootortwointhecentre.Thiscircumstance,andthegenerallysleepyairofthewholeprospecthere,togetherwiththeanimatedandcontrastingstateofthereversefaçade,suggestedtotheimaginationthatontheadaptationofthebuildingforfarmingpurposesthevitalprincipleofthehousehadturnedroundinsideitsbodytofacetheotherway.
