InreprintingthisstoryforaneweditionIamremindedthatitwasinthechaptersof"FarfromtheMaddingCrowd,"astheyappearedmonthbymonthinapopularmagazine,thatIfirstventuredtoadopttheword"Wessex"fromthepagesofearlyEnglishhistory,andgiveitafictitioussignificanceastheexistingnameofthedistrictonceincludedinthatextinctkingdom.TheseriesofnovelsIprojectedbeingmainlyofthekindcalledlocal,theyseemedtorequireaterritorialdefinitionofsomesorttolendunitytotheirscene.Findingthattheareaofasinglecountydidnotaffordacanvaslargeenoughforthispurpose,andthattherewereobjectionstoaninventedname,Idisinterredtheoldone.Thepressandthepublicwerekindenoughtowelcomethefancifulplan,andwillinglyjoinedmeintheanachronismofimaginingaWessexpopulationlivingunderQueenVictoria;—amodernWessexofrailways,thepennypost,mowingandreapingmachines,unionworkhouses,lucifermatches,labourerswhocouldreadandwrite,andNationalschoolchildren.ButIbelieveIamcorrectinstatingthat,untiltheexistenceofthiscontemporaneousWessexwasannouncedinthepresentstory,in1874,ithadneverbeenheardof,andthattheexpression,"aWessexpeasant,"or"aWessexcustom,"wouldtheretoforehavebeentakentorefertonothinglaterindatethantheNormanConquest.
Ididnotanticipatethatthisapplicationofthewordtoamodernusewouldextendoutsidethechaptersofmyownchronicles.Butthenamewassoontakenupelsewhereasalocaldesignation.
