XXV. The New Acquaintance Described

           Itisnotadenialofanythingtohavebeenalwayswithoutit,andwhatTroyhadneverenjoyedhedidnotmiss;but,beingfullyconsciousthatwhatsoberpeoplemissedheenjoyed,hiscapacity,thoughreallyless,seemedgreaterthantheirs.

           Hewasmoderatelytruthfultowardsmen,buttowomenliedlikeaCretanasystemofethicsaboveallotherscalculatedtowinpopularityatthefirstflushofadmissionintolivelysociety;andthepossibilityofthefavourgainedbeingtransitoryhadreferenceonlytothefuture.

           Heneverpassedthelinewhichdividesthesprucevicesfromtheugly;andhence,thoughhismoralshadhardlybeenapplauded,disapprovalofthemhadfrequentlybeentemperedwithasmile.Thistreatmenthadledtohisbecomingasortofregraterofothermen’sgallantries,tohisownaggrandizementasaCorinthian,ratherthantothemoralprofitofhishearers.

           Hisreasonandhispropensitieshadseldomanyreciprocatinginfluence,havingseparatedbymutualconsentlongago:thenceitsometimeshappenedthat,whilehisintentionswereashonourableascouldbewished,anyparticulardeedformedadarkbackgroundwhichthrewthemintofinerelief.Thesergeant’sviciousphasesbeingtheoffspringofimpulse,andhisvirtuousphasesofcoolmeditation,thelatterhadamodesttendencytobeoftenerheardofthanseen.

           Troywasfullofactivity,buthisactivitieswerelessofalocomotivethanavegetativenature;and,neverbeingbaseduponanyoriginalchoiceoffoundationordirection,theywereexercisedonwhateverobjectchancemightplaceintheirway.
