Thenforawhiletheworldhadmoonlight,andmanythingsstirredandwokethathadwaitedlonginthesleepofYavanna.TheservantsofMorgothwerefilledwithamazement,buttheElvesoftheOuterLandslookedupindelight;andevenastheMoonroseabovethedarknessinthewest,FingolfinletblowhissilvertrumpetsandbeganhismarchintoMiddle-earth,andtheshadowsofhishostwentlongandblackbeforethem.Tilionhadtraversedtheheavenseventimes,andthuswasmthefurthesteast,whenthevesselofArienwasmadeready.ThenAnararoseinglory,andthefirstdawnoftheSunwaslikeagreatfireuponthetowersofthePelori:thecloudsofMiddle-earthwerekindled,andtherewasheardthesoundofmanywaterfalls.ThenindeedMorgothwasdismayed,andhedescendedintotheuttermostdepthsofAngband,andwithdrewhisservants,sendingforthgreatreekanddarkcloudtohidehislandfromthelightoftheDay-star.
NowVardapurposedthatthetwovesselsshouldjourneyinIlmenandeverbealoft,butnottogether;eachshouldpassfromValinorintotheeastandreturn,theoneissuingfromthewestastheotherturnedfromtheeast.ThusthefirstofthenewdayswerereckonedafterthemanneroftheTrees,fromtheminglingofthelightswhenArienandTilionpassedinthen-courses,abovethemiddleoftheEarth.ButTilionwaswaywardanduncertaininspeed,andheldnottohisappointedpath;andhesoughttocomeneartoArien,beingdrawnbyhersplendour,thoughtheflameofAnarscorchedhim,andtheislandoftheMoonwasdarkened.
BecauseofthewaywardnessofTilion,therefore,andyetmorebecauseoftheprayersofLorienandEste,whosaidthatsleepandresthadbeenbanishedfromtheEarth,andthestarswerehidden,Vardachangedhercounsel,andallowedatimewhereintheworldshouldstillhaveshadowandhalf-light.
