ManytheregrievedfortheanguishofFeanor,buthislosswasnothisalone;andYavannaweptbythemound,infearthattheDarknessshouldswallowthelastraysoftheLightofValinorforever.ForthoughtheValardidnotyetunderstandfullywhathadbefallen,theyperceivedthatMelkorhadcalleduponsomeaidthatcamefrombeyondArda.
TheSilmarilshadpassedaway,andalloneitmayseemwhetherFeanorhadsaidyeaornaytoYavanna;yethadhesaidyeaatthefirst,beforethetidingscamefromFormenos,itmaybethathisafterdeedswouldhavebeenotherthantheywere.ButnowthedoomoftheNoldordrewnear.
MeanwhileMorgothescapingfromthepursuitoftheValarcametothewastesofAraman.ThislandlaynorthwardbetweentheMountainsofthePeloriandtheGreatSea,asAvatharlaytothesouth;butAramanwasawiderland,andbetweentheshoresandthemountainswerebarrenplains,evercolderastheIcedrewnearer.ThroughthisregionMorgothandUngoliantpassedinhaste,andsocamethroughthegreatmistsofOiomuretotheHelcaraxe,wherethestraitbetweenAramanandMiddle-earthwasfilledwithgrindingice;andhecrossedover,andcamebackatlasttothenorthoftheOuterLands.
