’Notthefirst,’saidMandos,buttheydidnotunderstandhisword;andagaintherewassilence,whileFeanorbroodedinthedark.Itseemedtohimthathewasbesetinaringofenemies,andthewordsofMelkorreturnedtohim,sayingthattheSilmarilswerenotsafe,iftheValarwouldpossessthem.’AndishenotValaasarethey,’saidhisthought,’anddoeshenotunderstandtheirhearts?Yea,athiefshallrevealthieves!’Thenhecriedaloud:’ThisthingIwillnotdooffreewill.ButiftheValarwillconstrainme,thenshallIknowindeedthatMelkorisoftheirkindred.’
ThenMandossaid:’Thouhastspoken.’AndNiennaaroseandwentupontoEzellohar,andcastbackhergreyhood,andwithhertearswashedawaythedefilementsofUngoliant;andshesanginmourningforthebitternessoftheworldandtheMarringofArda.
ButevenasNiennamourned,therecamemessengersfromFormenos,andtheywereNoldorandborenewtidingsofevil.FortheytoldhowablindDarknesscamenorthward,andinthemidstwalkedsomepowerforwhichtherewasnoname,andtheDarknessissuedfromit.ButMelkoralsowasthere,andhecametothehouseofFeanor,andthereheslewFinweKingoftheNoldorbeforehisdoors,andspilledthefirstbloodintheBlessedRealm;forFinwealonehadnotfledfromthehorroroftheDark.AndtheytoldthatMelkorhadbrokenthestrongholdofFormenos,andtakenalltheJewelsoftheNoldorthatwerehoardedinthatplace;andtheSilmarilsweregone.
