Theonehadleavesofdarkgreenthatbeneathwereasshiningsilver,andfromeachofhiscountlessflowersadewofsilverlightwaseverfalling,andtheearthbeneathwasdappledwiththeshadowofhisflutteringleaves.Theotherboreleavesofayounggreenlikethenew-openedbeech;theiredgeswereofglitteringgold.Flowersswunguponherbranchesinclustersofyellowflame,formedeachtoaglowinghornthatspilledagoldenrainupontheground;andfromtheblossomofthattreetherecameforthwarmthandagreatlight.TelperiontheonewascalledinValinor,andSilpion,andNinquelote,andmanyothernames;butLaurelintheotherwas,andMalinalda,andCulurien,andmanynamesinsongbeside.
Insevenhoursthegloryofeachtreewaxedtofullandwanedagaintonaught;andeachawokeoncemoretolifeanhourbeforetheotherceasedtoshine.ThusinValinortwiceeverydaytherecameagentlehourofsofterlightwhenbothtreeswerefaintandtheirgoldandsilverbeamsweremingled.Telperionwastheelderofthetreesandcamefirsttofullstatureandtobloom;andthatfirsthourinwhichheshone,thewhiteglimmerofasilverdawn,theValarreckonednotintothetaleofhours,butnamedittheOpeningHour,andcountedfromittheagesoftheirreigninValinor.ThereforeatthesixthhouroftheFirstDay,andofallthejoyfuldaysthereafter,untiltheDarkeningofValinor,Telperionceasedhistimeofflower;andatthetwelfthhourLaurelinherblossoming.AndeachdayoftheValarinAmancontainedtwelvehours,andendedwiththesecondminglingofthelights,inwhichLaurelinwaswaningbutTelperionwaswaxing.Butthelightthatwasspilledfromthetreesenduredlong,ereitwastakenupintotheairsorsankdownintotheearth;andthedewsofTelperionandtherainthatfellfromLaurelinVardahoardedingreatvatslikeshininglakes,thatweretoallthelandoftheValaraswellsofwaterandoflight.ThusbegantheDaysoftheBlissofValinor;andthusbeganalsotheCountofTime.
