ForManwewasfreefromevilandcouldnotcomprehendit,andheknewthatinthebeginning,inthethoughtofIluvatar,Melkorhadbeenevenashe;andhesawnottothedepthsofMelkor’sheart,anddidnotperceivethatalllovehaddepartedfromhimforever.ButUlmowasnotdeceived,andTulkasclenchedhishandswheneverhesawMelkorhisfoegoby;forifTulkasisslowtowrathheisslowalsotoforget.ButtheyobeyedthejudgementofManwe;forthosewhowilldefendauthorityagainstrebellionmustnotthemselvesrebel.
NowinhisheartMelkormosthatedtheEldar,bothbecausetheywerefairandjoyfulandbecauseinthemhesawthereasonforthearisingoftheValar,andhisowndownfall.Thereforeallthemoredidhefeignloveforthemandseektheirfriendship,andheofferedthemtheserviceofhisloreandlabourinanygreatdeedthattheywoulddo.TheVanyarindeedheldhiminsuspicion,fortheydweltinthelightoftheTreesandwerecontent;andtotheTelerihegavesmallheed,thinkingthemoflittleworth,toolstooweakforhisdesigns.ButtheNoldortookdelightinthehiddenknowledgethathecouldrevealtothem;andsomehearkenedtowordsthatitwouldhavebeenbetterforthemnevertohaveheard.MelkorindeeddeclaredafterwardsthatFeanorhadlearnedmuchartfromhiminsecret,andhadbeeninstructedbyhiminthegreatestofallhisworks;butheliedinhislustandhisenvy,fornoneoftheEldalieeverhatedMelkormorethanFeanorsonofFinwe,whofirstnamedhimMorgoth;andsnaredthoughhewasinthewebsofMelkor’smaliceagainsttheValarheheldnoconversewithhimandtooknocounselfromhim.
