ButthechildrenofIndisweregreatandglorious,andtheirchildrenalso;andiftheyhadnotlivedthehistoryoftheEldarwouldhavebeendiminished.
NowevenwhileFeanorandthecraftsmenoftheNoldorworkedwithdelight,foreseeingnoendtotheirlabours,andwhilethesonsofIndisgrewtotheirfullstature,theNoontideofValinorwasdrawingtoitsclose.ForitcametopassthatMelkor,astheValarhaddecreed,completedthetermofhisbondage,dwellingforthreeagesintheduressofMandos,alone.Atlength,asManwehadpromised,hewasbroughtagainbeforethethronesoftheValar.Thenhelookedupontheirgloryandtheirbliss,andenvywasinhisheart;helookedupontheChildrenofIluvatarthatsatatthefeetoftheMighty,andhatredfilledhim;helookeduponthewealthofbrightgems,andhelustedforthem;buthehidhisthoughts,andpostponedhisvengeance.
BeforethegatesofValmarMelkorabasedhimselfatthefeetofManweandsuedforpardon,vowingthatifhemightbemadeonlytheleastofthefreepeopleofValinorhewouldaidtheValarinalltheirworks,andmostofallinthehealingofthemanyhurtsthathehaddonetotheworld.AndNiennaaidedhisprayer;butMandoswassilentThenManwegrantedhimpardon;buttheValarwouldnotyetsufferhimtodepartbeyondtheirsightandvigilance,andhewasconstrainedtodwellwithinthegatesofValmar.
