NowbyfortuneandhisvigilanceMithrandirfirstlearnedoftheRing,ereSauronhadnewsofit;yethewasdismayedandindoubt.FortoogreatwastheevilpowerofthisthingforanyoftheWisetowield,unlesslikeCurunirhewishedhimselftobecomeatyrantandadarklordinhisturn;butneithercoulditbeconcealedfromSauronforever,norcoulditbeunmadebythecraftoftheElves.ThereforewiththehelpoftheDunedainoftheNorthMithrandirsetawatchuponthelandofthePeriannathandbidedhistime.ButSauronhadmanyears,andsoonheheardrumouroftheOneRing,whichaboveallthingshedesired,andhesentforththeNazgultotakeit.Thenwarwaskindled,andinbattlewithSaurontheThirdAgeendedevenasithadbegun.
