           InthelikenessofMentheyappeared,oldbutvigorous,andtheychangedlittlewiththeyears,andagedbutslowly,thoughgreatcareslayonthem;greatwisdomtheyhad,andmanypowersofmindandhand.LongtheyjourneyedfarandwideamongElvesandMen,andheldconversealsowithbeastsandwithbirds;andthepeoplesofMiddle-earthgavetothemmanynames,fortheirtruenamestheydidnotreveal.ChiefamongthemwerethosewhomtheElvescalledMithrandirandCurunir,butMenintheNorthnamedGandalfandSaruman.OftheseCurunirwastheeldestandcamefirst,andafterhimcameMithrandirandRadagast,andothersoftheIstariwhowentintotheeastofMiddle-earth,anddonotcomeintothesetales.Radagastwasthefriendofallbeastsandbirds;butCurunirwentmostamongMen,andhewassubtleinspeechandskilledinallthedevicesofsmith-craft.MithrandirwasclosestincounselwithElrondandtheElves.HewanderedfarintheNorthandWestandmadeneverinanylandanylastingabode;butCurunirjourneyedintotheEast,andwhenhereturnedhedweltatOrthancintheRingofIsengard,whichtheNumenoreansmadeinthedaysoftheirpower.

           EvermostvigilantwasMithrandir,andheitwasthatmostdoubtedthedarknessinMirkwood,forthoughmanydeemedthatitwaswroughtbytheRingwraiths,hefearedthatitwasindeedthefirstshadowofSauronreturning;andhewenttoDolGuldur,andtheSorcererfledfromhim,andtherewasawatchfulpeaceforalongwhile.
