ForcomingoutofthewastesoftheEasthetookuphisabodeinthesouthoftheforest,andslowlyhegrewandtookshapethereagain;inadarkhillhemadehisdwellingandwroughttherehissorcery,andallfolkfearedtheSorcererofDolGuldur,andyettheyknewnotatfirsthowgreatwastheirperil.
EvenasthefirstshadowswerefeltinMirkwoodthereappearedinthewestofMiddle-earththeIstari,whomMencalledtheWizards.Noneknewatthattimewhencetheywere,saveCirdanoftheHavens,andonlytoElrondandtoGaladrieldidherevealthattheycameovertheSea.ButafterwardsitwassaidamongtheElvesthattheyweremessengerssentbytheLordsoftheWesttocontestthepowerofSauron,ifheshouldariseagain,andtomoveElvesandMenandalllivingthingsofgoodwilltovaliantdeeds.
