NowSauron’slustandprideincreased,untilheknewnobounds,andhedeterminedtomakehimselfmasterofallthingsinMiddle-earth,andtodestroytheElves,andtocompass,ifhemight,thedownfallofNumenor.Hebrookednofreedomnoranyrivalry,andhenamedhimselfLordoftheEarth.AmaskhestillcouldwearsothatifhewishedhemightdeceivetheeyesofMen,seemingtothemwiseandfair.Butheruledratherbyforceandfear,iftheymightavail;andthosewhoperceivedhisshadowspreadingovertheworldcalledhimtheDarkLordandnamedhimtheEnemy;andhegatheredagainunderhisgovernmentalltheevilthingsofthedaysofMorgoththatremainedonearthorbeneathit,andtheOrcswereathiscommandandmultipliedlikeflies.ThustheBlackYearsbegan,whichtheElvescalltheDaysofFlight.InthattimemanyoftheElvesofMiddle-earthfledtoLindonandthenceovertheseasnevertoreturn;andmanyweredestroyedbySauronandhisservants.ButinLindonGil-galadstillmaintainedhispower,andSaurondarednotasyettopasstheMountainsofEredLuinnortoassailtheHavens;andGil-galadwasaidedbytheNumenoreans.ElsewhereSauronreigned,andthosewhowouldbefreetookrefugeinthefastnessesofwoodandmountain,andeverfearpursuedthem.
