MenhefoundtheeasiesttoswayofallthepeoplesoftheEarth;butlonghesoughttopersuadetheElvestohisservice,forheknewthattheFirstbornhadthegreaterpower;andhewentfarandwideamongthem,andhishuewasstillthatofonebothfairandwise.OnlytoLindonhedidnotcome,forGil-galadandElronddoubtedhimandhisfairseeming,andthoughtheyknewnotwhointruthhewastheywouldnotadmithimtothatland.ButelsewheretheElvesreceivedhimgladly,andfewamongthemhearkenedtothemessengersfromLindonbiddingthembeware;forSaurontooktohimselfthenameofAnnatar,theLordofGifts,andtheyhadatfirstmuchprofitfromhisfriendship.
