InthattimethefleetsoftheNumenoreansdarkenedtheseauponthewestoftheland,andtheywerelikeanarchipelagoofathousandisles;theirmastswereasaforestuponthemountains,andtheirsailslikeabroodingcloud;andtheirbannersweregoldenandblack.AndallthingswaiteduponthewordofAr-Pharazon;andSauronwithdrewintotheinmostcircleoftheTemple,andmenbroughthimvictimstobeburned.ThentheEaglesoftheLordsoftheWestcameupoutofthedayfall,andtheywerearrayedasforbattle,advancinginalinetheendofwhichdiminishedbeyondsight;andastheycametheirwingsspreadeverwider,graspingthesky.ButtheWestburnedredbehindthem,andtheyglowedbeneath,asthoughtheywerelitwithaflameofgreatanger,sothatallNumenorwasilluminedaswithasmoulderingfire;andmenlookeduponthefacesoftheirfellows,anditseemedtothemthattheywereredwithwrath.
ThenAr-Pharazonhardenedhisheart,andhewentaboardhismightyship,Alcarondas,CastleoftheSea.Manyoareditwasandmany-masted,goldenandsable;anduponitthethroneofAr-Pharazonwasset.Thenhedidonhispanoplyandhiscrown,andletraisehisstandard,andhegavethesignalfortheraisingoftheanchors;andinthathourthetrumpetsofNumenoroutrangthethunder.
