NowGimilkhaddiedtwoyearsbeforehistwohundredthyear(whichwasaccountedanearlydeathforoneofElros’lineeveninitswaning),butthisbroughtnopeacetotheKing.ForPharazonsonofGimilkhadhadbecomeamanyetmorerestlessandeagerforwealthandpowerthanhisfather.Hehadfaredoftenabroad,asaleaderinthewarsthattheNumenoreansmadetheninthecoastlandsofMiddle-earth,seekingtoextendtheirdominionoverMen;andthushehadwongreatrenownasacaptainbothbylandandbysea.ThereforewhenhecamebacktoNumenor,hearingofhisfather’sdeath,theheartsofthepeoplewereturnedtohim;forhebroughtwithhimgreatwealth,andwasforthetimefreeinhisgiving.
AnditcametopassthatTar-Palantirgrewwearyofgriefanddied.Hehadnoson,butadaughteronly,whomhenamedMirielintheElven-tongue;andtohernowbyrightandthelawsoftheNumenoreanscamethesceptre.
