InthisAge,asiselsewheretold,SauronaroseagaininMiddle-earth,andgrew,andturnedbacktotheevilinwhichhewasnurturedbyMorgoth,becomingmightyinhisservice.AlreadyinthedaysofTar-Minastir,theeleventhKingofNumenor,hehadfortifiedthelandofMordorandhadbuilttheretheTowerofBarad-dur,andthereafterhestroveeverforthedominionofMiddle-earth,tobecomeakingoverallkingsandasagoduntoMen.AndSauronhatedtheNumenoreans,becauseofthedeedsoftheirfathersandtheirancientalliancewiththeElvesandallegiancetotheValar;nordidheforgettheaidthatTar-MinastirhadrenderedtoGil-galadofold,inthattimewhentheOneRingwasforgedandtherewaswarbetweenSauronandtheElvesinEriador.NowhelearnedthatthekingsofNumenorhadincreasedhipowerandsplendour,andhehatedthemthemore;andhefearedthem,lesttheyshouldinvadehislandsandwrestfromhimthedominionoftheEast.ButforalongtimehedidnotdaretochallengetheLordsoftheSea,andhewithdrewfromthecoasts.
