ThiswasthebeginningofthatpeoplethatintheGrey-elvenspeecharecalledtheDunedain:theNumenoreans,KingsamongMen.ButtheydidnotthusescapefromthedoomofdeaththatIluvatarhadsetuponallMankind,andtheyweremortalstill,thoughtheiryearswerelong,andtheyknewnosickness,eretheshadowfelluponthem.
Thereforetheygrewwiseandglorious,andinallthingsmoreliketotheFirstbornthananyotherofthekindredsofMen;andtheyweretall,tallerthanthetallestofthesonsofMiddle-earth;andthelightoftheireyeswaslikethebrightstars.Buttheirnumbersincreasedonlyslowlyintheland,forthoughdaughtersandsonswereborntothem,fairerthantheirfathers,yettheirchildrenwerefew.
OfoldthechiefcityandhavenofNumenorwasinthemidstofitswesterncoasts,anditwascalledAnduniebecauseitfacedthesunset.Butinthemidstofthelandwasamountaintallandsteep,anditwasnamedtheMeneltarma,thePillarofHeaven,anduponitwasahighplacethatwashallowedtoEruIluvatar,anditwasopenandunroofed,andnoothertempleorfanewasthereinthelandoftheNumenoreans.AtthefeetofthemountainwerebuiltthetombsoftheKings,andhardbyuponahillwasArmenelos,fairestofcities,andtherestoodthetowerandthecitadelthatwasraisedbyElrossonofEarendil,whomtheValarappointedtobethefirstKingoftheDunedain.
