ThenthefriendsofElwewereleftbehind;andtheycalledthemselvesEglath,theForsakenPeople.TheydweltinthewoodsandhillsofBeleriand,ratherthanbythesea,whichfilledthemwithsorrow;butthedesireofAmanwaseverintheirhearts.
ButwhenElweawokefromhislongtrance,hecameforthfromNanElmothwithMelian,andtheydweltthereafterinthewoodsinthemidstoftheland.GreatlythoughhehaddesiredtoseeagainthelightoftheTrees,inthefaceofMelianhebeheldthelightofAmanasinanuncloudedmirror,andinthatlighthewascontent.Hispeoplegatheredabouthiminjoy,andtheywereamazed;forfairandnobleashehadbeen,nowheappearedasitwerealordoftheMaiar,hishairasgreysilver,tallestofalltheChildrenofIluvatar;andahighdoomwasbeforehim.
NowOssefollowedafterthehostofOlwe,andwhentheywerecometotheBayofEldamar(whichisElvenhome)hecalledtothem;andtheyknewhisvoice,andbeggedUlmotostaytheirvoyage.AndUlmograntedtheirrequest,andathisbiddingOssemadefasttheislandandrootedittothefoundationsofthesea.Ulmodidthisthemorereadily,forheunderstoodtheheartsoftheTeleri,andinthecounciloftheValarhehadspokenagainstthesummons,thinkingthatitwerebetterfortheQuenditoremaininMiddle-earth.TheValarwerelittlepleasedtolearnwhathehaddone;andFinwegrievedwhentheTelericamenot,andyetmorewhenhelearnedthatElwewasforsaken,andknewthatheshouldnotseehimagain,unlessitwereinthehallsofMandos.
