Ofthemwassprung,uponthesideofhisfathers,BrightEarendil;andintheLayofEarendilitistoldhowatthelast,whenthevictoryofMorgothwasalmostcomplete,hebuilthisshipVingilot,thatMencalledRothinzil,andvoyagedupontheunsailedseas,seekingeverforValinor;forhedesiredtospeakbeforethePowersonbehalfoftheTwoKindreds,thattheValarmighthavepityonthemandsendthemhelpintheiruttermostneed.ThereforebyElvesandMenheiscalledEarendiltheBlessed,forheachievedhisquestafterlonglaboursandmanyperils,andfromValinortherecamethehostoftheLordsoftheWest.ButEarendilcameneverbacktothelandsthathehadloved.
IntheGreatBattlewhenatlastMorgothwasoverthrownandThangorodrimwasbroken,theEdainaloneofthekindredsofMenfoughtfortheValar,whereasmanyothersfoughtforMorgoth.AndafterthevictoryoftheLordsoftheWestthoseoftheevilMenwhowerenotdestroyedfledbackintotheeast,wheremanyoftheirracewerestillwanderingintheunharvestedlands,wildandlawless,refusingalikethesummonsoftheValarandofMorgoth.AndtheevilMencameamongthem,andcastoverthemashadowoffear,andtheytookthemforkings.
