ButthejewelburnedthehandofMaedhrosinpainunbearable;andheperceivedthatitwasasEonwehadsaid,andthathisrighttheretohadbecomevoid,andthattheoathwasvain.Andbeinginanguishanddespairhecasthimselfintoagapingchasmfilledwithfire,andsoended;andtheSilmarilthatheborewastakenintothebosomoftheEarth,AnditistoldofMaglorthathecouldnotendurethepainwithwhichtheSilmariltormentedhim;andhecastitatlastintotheSea,andthereafterhewanderedeverupontheshores,singinginpainandregretbesidethewaves.ForMaglorwasmightyamongthesingersofold,namedonlyafterDaeronofDoriath;buthecameneverbackamongthepeopleoftheElves.AndthusitcametopassthattheSilmarilsfoundtheirlonghomes:oneintheairsofheaven,andoneinthefiresoftheheartoftheworld,andoneinthedeepwaters.
InthosedaystherewasagreatbuildingofshipsupontheshoresoftheWesternSea;andthenceinmanyafleettheEldarsetsailintotheWest,andcameneverbacktothelandsofweepingandofwar.
