ThenEonweasheraldoftheElderKingsummonedtheElvesofBeleriandtodepartfromMiddle-earth.ButMaedhrosandMaglorwouldnothearken,andtheyprepared,thoughnowwithwearinessandloathing,toattemptindespairthefulfilmentoftheiroath;fortheywouldhavegivenbattlefortheSilmarils,weretheywithheld,evenagainstthevictorioushostofValinor,eventhoughtheystoodaloneagainstalltheworld.AndtheysentamessagethereforetoEonwe,biddinghimyieldupnowthosejewelswhichofoldFeanortheirfathermadeandMorgothstolefromhim.
ButEonweansweredthattherighttotheworkoftheirfather,whichthesonsofFeanorformerlypossessed,hadnowperished,becauseoftheirmanyandmercilessdeeds,beingblindedbytheiroath,andmostofallbecauseoftheirslayingofDiorandtheassaultupontheHavens.ThelightoftheSilmarilsshouldgonowintotheWest,whenceitcameinthebeginning;andtoValinormustMaedhrosandMaglorreturn,andthereabidethejudgementoftheValar,bywhosedecreealonewouldEonweyieldthejewelsfromhischarge.ThenMaglordesiredindeedtosubmit,forhisheartwassorrowful,andhesaid:Theoathsaysnotthatwemaynotbideourtime,anditmaybethatinValinorallshallbeforgivenandforgot,andweshallcomeintoourowninpeace.
