BeforetherisingofthesunEarendilslewAncalagontheBlack,themightiestofthedragon-host,andcasthimfromthesky;andhefelluponthetowersofThangorodrim,andtheywerebrokeninhisruin.Thenthesunrose,andthehostoftheValarprevailed,andwell-nighallthedragonsweredestroyed;andallthepitsofMorgothwerebrokenandunroofed,andthemightoftheValardescendedintothedeepsoftheearth.ThereMorgothstoodatlastatbay,andyetunvaliant.Hefledintothedeepestofhismines,andsuedforpeaceandpardon;buthisfeetwerehewnfromunderhim,andhewashurleduponhisface.ThenhewasboundwiththechainAngainorwhichhehadwornaforetime,andhisironcrowntheybeatintoacollarforhisneck,andhisheadwasboweduponhisknees.AndthetwoSilmarilswhichremainedtoMorgothweretakenfromhiscrown,andtheyshoneunsulliedbeneaththesky;andEonwetookthem,andguardedthem.
ThusanendwasmadeofthepowerofAngbandintheNorth,and’theevilrealmwasbroughttonaught;andoutofthedeepprisonsamultitudeofslavescameforthbeyondallhopeintothelightofday,andtheylookeduponaworldthatwaschanged.Forsogreatwasthefuryofthoseadversariesthatthenorthernregionsofthewesternworldwererentasunder,andthesearoaredinthroughmanychasms,andtherewasconfusionandgreatnoise;andriversperishedorfoundnewpaths,andthevalleyswereupheavedandthehillstroddown;andSirionwasnomore.
