ThenTuorandIdrilledsuchremnantsofthepeopleofGondolinastheycouldgatherintheconfusionoftheburningdownthesecretwaywhichIdrilhadprepared;andofthatpassagethecaptainsofAngbandknewnothing,andthoughtnotthatanyfugitiveswouldtakeapathtowardsthenorthandthehighestpartsofthemountainsandthenighesttoAngband.Thefumeoftheburning,andthesteamofthefairfountainsofGondolinwitheringintheflameofthedragonsofthenorth,felluponthevaleofTumladeninmournfulmists;andthuswastheescapeofTuorandhiscompanyaided,fortherewasstillalongandopenroadtofollowfromthetunnel’smouthtothefoothillsofthemountains.Nonethelesstheycamethither,andbeyondhopetheyclimbed,inwoeandmisery,forthehighplaceswerecoldandterrible,andtheyhadamongthemmanythatwerewounded,andwomenandchildren.
Therewasadreadfulpass,CirithThoronathitwasnamed,theEagles’Cleft,wherebeneaththeshadowofthehighestpeaksanarrowpathwounditsway;ontherighthanditwaswalledbyaprecipice,andontheleftadreadfulfallleaptintoemptiness.Alongthatnarrowwaytheirmarchwasstrung,whentheywereambushedbyOrcs,forMorgothhadsetwatchersallabouttheencirclinghills;andaBalrogwaswiththem.Thendreadfulwastheirplight,andhardlywouldtheyhavebeensavedbythevalourofyellow-hairedGlorfindel,chiefoftheHouseoftheGoldenFlowerofGondolin,hadnotThorondorcometimelytotheiraid.
