ThehostofMorgothcameoverthenorthernhillswheretheheightwasgreatestandthewatchleastvigilant,anditcameatnightuponatimeoffestival,whenallthepeopleofGondolinwereuponthewallstoawaittherisingsun,andsingtheirsongsatitsuplifting;forthemorrowwasthegreatfeastthattheynamedtheGatesofSummer.Buttheredlightmountedthehillsinthenorthandnotintheeast;andtherewasnostayintheadvanceofthefoeuntiltheywerebeneaththeverywallsofGondolin,andthecitywasbeleagueredwithouthope.Ofthedeedsofdesperatevalourtheredone,bythechieftainsofthenoblehousesandtheirwarriors,andnotleastbyTuor,muchistoldinTheFallofGondolin:ofthebattleofEcthelionoftheFountainwithGothmogLordofBalrogsintheverysquareoftheKing,whereeachslewtheother,andofthedefenceofthetowerofTurgonbythepeopleofhishousehold,untilthetowerwasoverthrown;andmightywasitsfallandthefallofTurgoninitsruin.
TuorsoughttorescueIdrilfromthesackofthecity,butMaeglinhadlaidhandsonher,andonEarendil;andTuorfoughtwithMaeglinonthewalls,andcasthimfarout,andhisbodyasitfellsmotetherockyslopesofAmonGwareththriceereitpitchedintotheflamesbelow.
