ThenthedaysofGondolinwereyetfullofjoyandpeace;andnoneknewthattheregionwhereintheHiddenKingdomlayhadbeenatlastrevealedtoMorgothbythecriesofHurin,whenstandinginthewildernessbeyondtheEncirclingMountainsandfindingnoentrancehecalledonTurgonindespair.ThereafterthethoughtofMorgothwasbentunceasingonthemountainouslandbetweenAnachandtheupperwatersofSirion,whitherhisservantshadneverpassed;yetstillnospyorcreatureoutofAngbandcouldcometherebecauseofthevigilanceoftheeagles,andMorgothwasthwartedinthefulfilmentofhisdesigns.ButIdrilCelebrindalwaswiseandfar-seeing,andherheartmisgaveher,andforebodingcreptuponherspiritasacloud.Thereforeinthattimesheletprepareasecretway,thatshouldleaddownfromthecityandpassingoutbeneaththesurfaceoftheplainissuefarbeyondthewalls,northwardofAmonGwareth;andshecontriveditthattheworkwasknownbuttofew,andnowhisperofitcametoMaeglin’sears.
