NordidtheEldardesiretohasten,fortheywerefilledwithwonderatallthattheysaw,andbymanylandsandriverstheywishedtoabide;andthoughallwereyetwillingtowander,manyfearedrathertheirjourney’sendthanhopedforitThereforewheneverOromedeparted,havingattimesothermatterstoheed,theyhaltedandwentforwardnomore,untilhereturnedtoguidethem.AnditcametopassaftermanyyearsofjourneyinginthismannerthattheEldartooktheircoursethroughaforest,andtheycametoagreatriver,widerthananytheyhadyetseen;andbeyonditweremountainswhosesharphornsseemedtopiercetherealmofthestars.Thisriver,itissaid,waseventheriverwhichwasaftercalledAnduintheGreat,andwaseverthefrontierofthewest-landsofMiddle-earth.ButmemountainsweretheHithaeglir,theTowersofMistuponthebordersofEriador;yettheyweretallerandmoreterribleinthosedays,andwererearedbyMelkortohindertheridingofOrome.NowtheTeleriabodelongontheeastbankofthatriverandwishedtoremainthere,buttheVanyarandmeNoldorpassedoverit,andOromeledthemintothepassesofthemountains.AndwhenOromewasgoneforwardtheTelerilookedupontheshadowyheightsandwereafraid.
ThenonearoseinthehostofOlwe,whichwaseverthehindmostontheroad;Lenwehewascalled.Heforsookthewestwardmarch,andledawayanumerouspeople,southwardsdownthegreatriver,andtheypassedoutoftheknowledgeoftheirkinuntillongyearswerepast.ThoseweretheNandor;andtheybecameapeopleapart,unliketheirkin,savethattheylovedwater,anddweltmostbesidefallsandrunningstreams.Greaterknowledgetheyhadoflivingthings,treeandherb,birdandbeast,thanallotherElves.InafteryearsDenethor,sonofLenwe,turnedagainwestatlast,andledapartofthatpeopleoverthemountainsintoBelerianderetherisingoftheMoon.
