NowMelkorbeganthedelvingandbuildingofavastfortress,deepunderEarth,beneathdarkmountainswherethebeamsofIlluinwerecoldanddim.ThatstrongholdwasnamedUtumno.AndthoughtheValarknewnaughtofitasyet,nonethelesstheevilofMelkorandtheblightofhishatredflowedoutthence,andtheSpringofArdawasmarred.
Greenthingsfellsickandrotted,andriverswerechokedwithweedsandslime,andfensweremade,rankandpoisonous,thebreedingplaceofflies;andforestsgrewdarkandperilous,thehauntsoffear;andbeastsbecamemonstersofhornandivoryanddyedtheearthwithblood.ThentheValarknewindeedthatMelkorwasatworkagain,andtheysoughtforhishidingplace.ButMelkor,trustinginthestrengthofUtumnoandthemightofhisservants,cameforthsuddenlytowar,andstruckthefirstblow,eretheValarwereprepared;andheassailedthelightsofIlluinandOrmal,andcastdowntheirpillarsandbroketheirlamps.Intheoverthrowofthemightypillarslandswerebrokenandseasaroseintumult;andwhenthelampswerespilleddestroyingflamewaspouredoutovertheEarth.AndtheshapeofArdaandthesymmetryofitswatersanditslandswasmarredinthattime,sothatthefirstdesignsoftheValarwereneverafterrestored.
