YetmanyoftheQuendiwerefilledwithdreadathiscoming;andthiswasthedoingofMelkor.ForbyafterknowledgethewisedeclarethatMelkor,everwatchful,wasfirstawareoftheawakeningoftheQuendi,andsentshadowsandevilspiritstospyuponthemandwaylaythem.Soitcametopass,someyearserethecomingofOrome,thatifanyoftheElvesstrayedfarabroad,aloneorfewtogether,theywouldoftenvanish,andneverreturn;andtheQuendisaidthattheHunterhadcaughtthem,andtheywereafraid.AndindeedthemostancientsongsoftheElves,ofwhichechoesarerememberedstillintheWest,telloftheshadow-shapesthatwalkedinthehillsaboveCuivienen,orwouldpasssuddenlyoverthestars;andofthedarkRideruponhiswildhorsethatpursuedthosethatwanderedtotakethemanddevourthem.NowMelkorgreatlyhatedandfearedtheridingofOrome,andeitherhesentindeedhisdarkservantsasriders,orhesetlyingwhispersabroad,forthepurposethattheQuendishouldshunOrome,ifevertheyshouldmeet.
ThusitwasthatwhenNaharneighedandOromeindeedcameamongthem,someoftheQuendihidthemselves,andsomefledandwerelost.Butthosethathadcourage,andstayed,perceivedswiftlythattheGreatRiderwasnoshapeoutofdarkness;forthelightofAmanwasinhisface,andallthenoblestoftheElvesweredrawntowardsit.
ButofthoseunhappyoneswhowereensnaredbyMelkorlittleisknownofacertainty.ForwhoofthelivinghasdescendedintothepitsofUtumno,orhasexploredthedarknessofthecounselsofMelkor?YetthisisheldtruebythewiseofEressea,thatallthoseoftheQuendiwhocameintothehandsofMelkor,ereUtumnowasbroken,wereputthereinprison,andbyslowartsofcrueltywerecorruptedandenslaved;andthusdidMelkorbreedthehideousraceoftheOrcsinenvyandmockeryoftheElves,ofwhomtheywereafterwardsthebitterestfoes.
