InthattimeThingolturnedtoMelian;butnowshewithheldhercounselfromhim,sayingthatthedoomthathehaddevisedmustworktoitsappointedend,andthathemustwaitnowupontime.ButThingollearnedthatLuthienhadjourneyedfarfromDoriath,formessagescamesecretlyfromCelegorm,ashasbeentold,sayingthatFelagundwasdead,andBerenwasdead,butLuthienwasinNargothrond,andthatCelegormwouldwedher.ThenThingolwaswrathful,andhesentforthspies,thinkingtomakewaruponNargothrond;andthushelearnedthatLuthienwasagainfled,andthatCelegormandCurufinweredrivenfromNargothrond.Thenhiscounselwasindoubt,forhehadnotthestrengthtoassailthesevensonsofFeanor;buthesentmessengerstoHimringtosummontheiraidinseekingforLuthien,sinceCelegormhadnotsenthertothehouseofherfather,norhadhekepthersafely.
Butinthenorthofhisrealmhismessengersmetwithaperilsuddenandunlookedfor:theonslaughtofCarcharoth,theWolfofAngband.Inhismadnesshehadrunraveningfromthenorth,andpassingatlengthoverTaur-nu-FuinuponitseasternsidehecamedownfromthesourcesofEsgalduinlikeadestroyingfire.
