Maedhrosdiddeedsofsurpassingvalour,andtheOrcsfledbeforehisface;forsincehistormentuponThangorodrimhisspiritburnedlikeawhitefirewithin,andhewasasonethatreturnsfromthedead.ThusthegreatfortressupontheHillofHimringcouldnotbetaken,andmanyofthemostvaliantthatremained,bothofthepeopleofDorthonionandoftheeastmarches,ralliedtheretoMaedhros;andforawhileheclosedoncemorethePassofAglon,sothattheOrcscouldnotenterBeleriandbythatroad.ButtheyoverwhelmedtheridersofthepeopleofFeanoruponLothlann,forGlaurungcamethither,andpassedthroughMaglor’sGap,anddestroyedallthelandbetweenthearmsofGelion.AndtheOrcstookthefortressuponthewestslopesofMountRerir,andravagedallThargelion,thelandofCaranthir;andtheydefiledLakeHelevorn.ThencetheypassedoverGelionwithfireandterrorandcamefarintoEastBeleriand.MaglorjoinedMaedhrosuponHimring;butCaranthirfledandjoinedtheremnantofhispeopletothescatteredfolkofthehunters,AmrodandAmras,andtheyretreatedandpassedRamdalinthesouth.UponAmonErebtheymaintainedawatchandsomestrengthofwar,andtheyhadaidoftheGreen-elves;andtheOrcscamenotintoOssiriand,nortoTaur-im-Duinathandthewildsofthesouth.
NownewscametoHithlumthatDorthonionwaslostandthesonsofFinarfinoverthrown,andthatthesonsofFeanorweredrivenfromtheirlands.
