           Therecameatimeofwinter,whennightwasdarkandwithoutmoon;andthewideplainofArd-galenstretcheddimbeneaththecoldstars,fromthehill-fortsoftheNoldortothefeetofThangorodrim.Thewatch-firesburnedlow,andtheguardswerefew;ontheplainfewwerewakinginthecampsofthehorsemenofHithlum.ThensuddenlyMorgothsentforthgreatriversofflamethatrandownswifterthanBalrogsfromThangorodrim,andpouredoveralltheplain;andtheMountainsofIronbelchedforthfiresofmanypoisonoushues,andthefumeofthemstankupontheair,andwasdeadly.ThusArd-galenperished,andfiredevoureditsgrasses;anditbecameaburnedanddesolatewaste,fullofachokingdust,barrenandlifeless.
