ItissaidthatTurgonappointeditsnametobeOndolindeinthespeechoftheElvesofValinor,theRockoftheMusicofWater,fortherewerefountainsuponthehill;butintheSindarintonguethenamewaschanged,anditbecameGondolin,theHiddenRock.ThenTurgonpreparedtodepartfromNevrastandleavehishallsinVinyamarbesidethesea;andthereUlmocametohimonceagain,andspokewithhim.Andhesaid:’NowthoushaltgoatlasttoGondolin,Turgon;andIwillmaintainmypowerintheValeofSirion,andinallthewaterstherein,sothatnoneshallmarkthygoing,norshallanyfindtherethehiddenentranceagainstthywill.LongestofalltherealmsoftheEldalieshallGondolinstandagainstMelkor.Butlovenottoowelltheworkofthyhandsandthedevicesofthyheart;andrememberthatthetruehopeoftheNoldorliethintheWestandcomethfromtheSea.’
AndUlmowarnedTurgonthathealsolayundertheDoomofMandos,whichUlmohadnopowertoremove.
’Thusitmaycometopass,’hesaid,’thatthecurseoftheNoldorshallfindtheetooeretheend,andtreasonawakewithinthywalls.Thentheyshallbeinperiloffire.Butifthisperildrawethnighindeed,thenevenfromNevrastoneshallcometowarnthee,andfromhimbeyondruinandfirehopeshallbebornforElvesandMen.Leavethereforeinthishousearmsandasword,thatinyearstocomehemayfindthem,andthusshaltthouknowhim,andnotbedeceived.’AndUlmodeclaredtoTurgonofwhatkindandstatureshouldbethehelmandmailandswordthatheleftbehind.
